Karnataka’s political landscape lost one of its veteran leaders on December 1, 2025, when R.V. Devraj passed away at the age of 67. The senior Indian National Congress figure served as a three-time Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA). Throughout his career, he left a lasting mark on Bengaluru politics, particularly in the Chamrajpet and Chickpet constituencies. People knew him for his strong connection with grassroots communities. As a result, he earned respect as a powerful voice for backward classes in the state. Ultimately, his death brought an end to a political career spanning several decades.

Early Life and Education

R.V. Devraj entered the world on December 3, 1957, in Bangalore, which now goes by the name Bengaluru. His father, the late Sri R.V. Venkateshappa, worked as a vegetable merchant at the City Market. Consequently, Devraj grew up in humble circumstances. During his childhood, he witnessed firsthand the struggles of ordinary people in the city. His formal education went up to the 7th standard. However, what he lacked in academic credentials, he made up for through practical experience and natural leadership abilities. Despite limited schooling, he rose to become one of the most formidable figures in Karnataka state politics. In doing so, he proved that determination and connection with people matter more than degrees.

Devraj married Smt. Mamatha Devaraj, who people also know as R.B. Mamatha Raj. Over the years, his wife got involved in social welfare activities. Additionally, she occasionally appeared in news reports related to civic matters. For instance, in 2019, she filed a cheating case against a dentist. This brought her into public attention. Meanwhile, the couple had two children who grew up watching their father’s political journey.

Their son, R.V. Yuvraj, followed his father into politics. Subsequently, he served as a BBMP Corporator representing the Sudhama Nagar ward. However, Yuvraj also faced controversy. Currently, photos of the family can be found on Devraj’s social media profiles. Furthermore, various news archives also document his political activities over the years.

Political Career (MLA & Key Positions)

Throughout his life, R.V. Devraj remained a loyal member of the Indian National Congress. His journey as an elected representative began when he won the Chamrajpet constituency in 1989. Later, he proved his popularity by winning the same seat again in 1999. Then, in 2004, Devraj made a gesture that showed his commitment to the party. He vacated his Chamrajpet seat to allow then-Chief Minister S.M. Krishna to contest from that constituency.

Meanwhile, constituency delimitation changed the political map of Bengaluru. After this change, Devraj successfully contested from the Chickpet constituency in 2013. This secured his third term as an MLA. However, his electoral fortune changed in subsequent years. Unfortunately, he lost the Chickpet seat in both the 2018 and 2023 assembly elections. This marked the end of his tenure as a legislator.

Beyond his role as an MLA, Devraj held several important positions. First, he served as Chairman of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) from 2000 to 2007. This role gave him significant influence over public transportation in the state. Later, in 2016, authorities appointed him as Chairman of the Slum Development Board. In this position, he worked on improving living conditions for the poorest residents of Bengaluru. Additionally, he also held the position of KPCC General Secretary. This gave him a crucial organizational role within the Congress party structure.

Overall, Devraj stood among the wealthier politicians in Bengaluru. Over time, he accumulated substantial assets through his political and business career. The affidavit he filed during the 2018 elections revealed his financial standing. Specifically, he declared movable assets worth approximately ₹13.90 crore in his own name. At the same time, his spouse declared movable assets of about ₹6.06 crore. Moreover, his immovable assets proved even more substantial. He declared property worth roughly ₹54.22 crore. Similarly, his wife declared ₹7.08 crore.
