If you’re a pensioner in the UK and you’re still paying full price on every bill that lands on your doormat, you could be throwing away hundreds of pounds every single year. The truth is, thousands of older Britons are quietly overpaying for things they could be getting for free — or at a heavily reduced cost — simply because nobody told them otherwise.
Here are four bills seniors should stop paying in full, starting today.
1. Your TV Licence
If you are aged 75 or over and receive Pension Credit, you are entitled to a free TV licence — worth £174.50 a year. Yet thousands of eligible seniors are still paying every month because they either don’t claim Pension Credit or don’t realise the two are linked.
Even if you’re not yet 75, if you live in a care home or are registered blind, you may qualify for a significant discount. Call TV Licensing on 0300 790 6165 and ask directly — don’t assume you don’t qualify until you’ve checked.
2. NHS Prescription Charges
Every single prescription in England costs £9.90 per item — but if you are 60 or over, you pay absolutely nothing. Not a penny.
If you’ve been paying at the pharmacy out of habit or confusion, you may even be owed a refund. Show your proof of age and make sure the pharmacy has your details updated. If you’re under 60 but have a qualifying long-term condition like diabetes or epilepsy, you may still be exempt, so always ask.
3. Council Tax
Millions of pensioners are living alone and still paying full council tax. If you are the only adult in your home, you are entitled to a 25% single person discount automatically — but you have to apply for it yourself, your council won’t just give it to you.
On top of that, if you receive Pension Credit Guarantee, you may qualify for a 100% council tax reduction, meaning you pay nothing at all. Contact your local council today and ask about both the single occupancy discount and council tax support — the savings can be enormous.
4. Water Bills
This one surprises most people. If you are on a low income or receive certain benefits, your water company may offer a social tariff that can cut your water bill by up to 50%. Every water company in England and Wales is required to offer some form of financial support scheme, but almost none of them advertise it loudly.
Call your water provider directly and ask: “Do you offer a social tariff or hardship scheme for pensioners?” That one question could save you over £200 a year.
The Bigger Picture
The UK government and various organisations have set up these exemptions specifically for seniors — but the responsibility to claim them falls on you. Nobody is going to knock on your door and hand you the money back. A quick phone call or a visit to gov.uk/benefits-calculators could reveal hundreds of pounds in annual savings you didn’t even know existed.
If you’re not sure where to start, Age UK’s free helpline (0800 678 1602) can check your full entitlement in a single call.
You worked hard your entire life. Stop overpaying for things you’ve already earned the right to receive for free.
