Banks Are Banning This for Seniors — Check Your Account Now

Published on

If you’re over 60 and haven’t checked your bank account recently, you might want to do it today. Across the UK, major high street banks are quietly tightening their rules — and some of the changes are hitting older customers the hardest. This isn’t scaremongering. It’s happening right now, and millions of seniors are already feeling the impact.

What Are Banks Actually Banning?

Over the past year, several UK banks have introduced restrictions that disproportionately affect elderly customers. Here’s what’s being limited or removed:

  • Free in-branch services — Banks including Barclays, NatWest, and HSBC have closed hundreds of branches, forcing seniors online
  • Paper statements — Many banks are switching to digital-only statements, leaving those without internet access in the dark
  • Cheque deposits over the counter — Some branches now refuse walk-in cheque deposits, pushing customers toward mobile apps
  • Telephone banking for certain transactions — Automated systems are replacing human advisors for routine queries
  • Joint account access rules — Stricter ID verification is making it harder for carers or family members to assist elderly relatives

Why Are Seniors Being Hit Hardest?

The shift toward digital banking sounds convenient on paper, but the reality is very different for older customers. Around 4.5 million people in the UK are considered digitally excluded — and the majority are over 65. When your bank removes in-person or telephone options, it doesn’t just cause inconvenience. It can leave you completely locked out of your own money.

Age UK has repeatedly raised concerns that banks are failing their older customers, calling the rapid pace of digital transition “deeply unfair” to those who rely on traditional banking methods.

The Hidden Risk — Financial Scams Targeting Seniors

Here’s something the banks don’t advertise loudly. As elderly customers are pushed online without proper guidance or support, they become significantly more vulnerable to fraud. In 2025, over £1.2 billion was lost to bank transfer scams in the UK — and older people were among the most targeted victims.

Banks have a legal duty of care under the FCA’s Consumer Duty rules, introduced in 2023. This means they must prove their services are accessible and not harmful to vulnerable customers. If your bank is making it genuinely difficult for you to access your money, you have the right to complain.

What You Should Check Right Now

Don’t wait for your bank to tell you about these changes. Take action today:

  1. Log into your account or call your bank to confirm your current access options
  2. Check if your local branch is still open — use your bank’s branch finder tool online
  3. Request paper statements in writing if you need them — banks must provide these on request under FCA guidelines
  4. Register a trusted person on your account if you need help managing it — most banks offer a Third Party Mandate
  5. Report any issues to the Financial Ombudsman Service at financial-ombudsman.org.uk if your bank is not meeting your needs
  6. Switch banks if necessary — you’re entitled to use the Current Account Switch Service (CASS) for free

Know Your Rights

Under the FCA Consumer Duty, banks must treat all customers fairly — including older and vulnerable ones. If a bank removes a service you depend on without offering a suitable alternative, that’s not just poor customer service. It could be a regulatory breach.

You can contact the Financial Ombudsman Service on 0800 023 4567 — it’s free, independent, and on your side.

Share This With Someone You Know

If you have an elderly parent, grandparent, or neighbour, share this article with them. Many seniors don’t realise their banking rights are being quietly eroded until it’s too late. A quick conversation today could save someone a serious financial headache tomorrow.
