Sharadchandra Govindrao Pawar is an Indian politician known for his long career in national politics, serving three terms as Chief Minister of Maharashtra and holding cabinet positions as Minister of Defence and Minister of Agriculture. Sharad Pawar was born on December 12, 1940, in Baramati, Maharashtra, to Govindrao Pawar and Shardabai Pawar. He is one of eleven children born to the couple. Govindrao Pawar had a long career with the Sahakari Kharedi Vikri Sangh, a Baramati Farmers’ Cooperative, and was involved in establishing cooperative sugar mills in the area during the 1950s.
Pawar’s father was elected to the district local board three times between 1937 and 1952. Sharad Pawar completed his education up to the 10th standard (SSC) at Maharashtra Education Society’s High School in Baramati. He later attended Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce in Pune, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce.
Sharad Pawar Political Beginnings
Pawar began his political career in 1956, organizing a protest march for Goan Independence in Pravaranagar. He joined the Youth Congress in 1958 and later became the president of the Pune district Youth Congress in 1962. By 1964, he had become one of two secretaries of the Maharashtra Youth Congress.
In 1967, Pawar was nominated as the candidate for Baramati constituency of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly by the undivided Congress Party. He won the election and represented the constituency from 1967 to 1990. In March 1972, Chief Minister Vasantrao Naik brought Pawar into his cabinet as state Home Affairs Minister.
Chief Minister Terms
In July 1978, Pawar broke away from the Congress (U) party to form a coalition government with the Janata Party, becoming the youngest Chief Minister of Maharashtra at age 38. This Progressive Democratic Front government was dismissed in February 1980 following Indira Gandhi’s return to power. Pawar returned to Congress (I) in 1987 and was chosen to replace Shankarrao Chavan as Chief Minister in June 1988.
After the 1990 state assembly elections, Congress fell short of an absolute majority but Pawar was sworn in as Chief Minister again on March 4, 1990, with support from independent MLAs. Following the Bombay riots, he was sworn in for his fourth term as Chief Minister on March 6, 1993. His government faced several challenges including the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts, corruption allegations, and the 1994 Gowari stampede.
Formation of Nationalist Congress Party
In 1999, Pawar, P. A. Sangma, and Tariq Anwar demanded that the Congress party propose a native-born prime ministerial candidate instead of Italian-born Sonia Gandhi. This led to their expulsion from the party by the Congress Working Committee. In response, Pawar and Sangma founded the Nationalist Congress Party in June 1999.
Despite the split, the NCP aligned with the Congress party to form a coalition government in Maharashtra after the 1999 state assembly elections. The NCP later joined the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the national level.

After the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, Pawar joined the UPA government as Minister of Agriculture under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He retained this portfolio when the UPA was reelected in 2009.
